A new orchid has been found in the Western Andes of Colombia. This new orchid species is endemic to a small area. Its name, the Dracula orchid. The publication and its description in Volume 20, Number 2 issue of Lankesteriana International Journal of Orchidiology has made it official. The name has been given after Leonardo DiCaprio’s mother, Irmelin Indenbirken, in recognition of DiCaprio´s commitment to conservation.
The Western Andes Cloud Forest is home to over 200 species of orchids. You can find the miniature Andinia, Stelis, and Lepanthes, or larger specimens such as Masdevallia, Maxillaria, and Dracula.
